Heartstrung are fresh on to the East Midlands scene, with debut single 'Ashes of Time' setting the bar high. However, the band deliver yet another hit with latest track 'Cold Blooded'.
It's loud, it's heavy, it's dark.
The opening riff reminds me of the magnum opus in Foo Fighters splatterfest Studio 666, dissonant and ominous sounding. It sets the scene quite well for the distorted chugs that carry the track forward.
The instrumentation is tight, and by the time a sweep heavy solo comes in, it's hard to dislike the track. There is an air of familiarity about it, the band combining metalcore and hardcore, yet still succeeding in making it sound fresh.
The vocals find their strength when the growls come in, like icing on a cake. The angst embodied is a perfect accompaniment to the heavy riffs.
I will admit that this is definitely a grower, needing a few listens to properly cement itself. But that cymbal hit just before the solo scratched my brain on every listen, timed perfectly, coming in at just the right point for maximum effect.
It's a relatively short runtime, coming in at just over three and a half minutes, but the band fit in everything they need to. Ending with slowed down, somehow even heavier chords, the track packs punches right until the last note.
Heartstrung are two for two. I look forward to seeing what they deliver next.
