Second City Sin: "We Aim To Honour" With New Track "Morose"

Second City Sin are another band fresh out of Birmingham's ever growing rock and metal scene. Following debut release "Under The Landslide", the band start their next chapter with hard hitting "Morose".

I had the pleasure of speaking to vocalist Tyler Quantrill, discussing all things music and gigs, and looking behind the new track.

R: Hi guys! Starting things off - introduce yourselves. Who are Second City Sin?

T: Second City Sin was born in Birmingham in early 2024 with the desire to create loud, authentic and riff driven rock and roll, presented in high energy live performances. We aim to honour the influences of hard and blues rock, and the influence of Birmingham music and culture, while delivering a fresh, energetic sound and performance.

Who are some of your most prevalent influences?

Across the band we share a wide variety of influences, with the key influences on our sound being bands such as Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Queens Of The Stone Age Black Stone Cherry and Alter Bridge.

You've recently released your second single "Morose". Can you tell me what the track's about?

Our guitarist Chaz Carr wrote the riffs for the track while mourning the loss of a friend, and I feel they captured such a strong emotion. He sat on those riffs and they really clicked when we began writing this song together. I wrote the lyrics detailing an autobiographical ongoing mental health battle, and reflecting on the present moment of the human condition, with a desire to grow and flourish into a better way of life.

It was our first song that we wrote in a drop tuning, and introduced a heavier, grittier and darker side to the band. I feel this created variety in contrast to the more classic rock tone of debut single ‘Under The Landslide’ (2024), which lyrically had an aspect of acceptance within our personal battles.

You've got a headline show coming up at the O2 Institute 3 in Birmingham. What can fans expect to see?

The O2 Institute 3 show will be our first headline performance, and therefore a celebration of what we’ve achieved as a band so far, particularly the release of new single ‘Morose’.

"I feel the growth within this band with every show we do"

We always aim to bring a full throttle live show, but we’re planning to take things to the next level. We’re really paying attention to the finer details and have crafted a really exciting setlist, which for the first time amongst a set of original songs will include an amplified and ‘Sinned-up’ cover version of a song from a totally different genre!

And lastly - what's one thing you can't wait for in 2025?

We’ve started the year off strong, with a great show in January at The Dark Horse in Moseley opening for Pariah State, and upcoming shows in Wellingborough and Birmingham supporting ‘Morose’. I feel the growth within this band with every show we do, so I’d have to say that we can’t wait to look out on audiences this year as we play more shows, and see new and old faces coming together through live music and creating experiences together.
